When training for your first time, you may feel out of your depth, you may have never been inside a Dojo before and maybe never thrown or blocked a punch.
Don’t worry this is normal, you will not be asked to do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable we want you to enjoy the experience and come back again.
You will be welcomed by our instructors and students, who will help you settle in and answer any questions you may have about the club.
You will probably be wondering what you should wear for your first lesson.
What you Should wear: For New Students T-Shirt & Jogging Bottoms will be fine, it is important that you are comfortable, and your movement is not restricted by your clothes.
What you Shouldn’t wear! Please do not wear Jeans, Buttoned Shirts, Skirts, Vests or Shorts.
Watches and jewelry should NOT be worn during training.
A typical session will be set out in the following format.
Opening the Session: We will begin with some formal mat etiquette which involves taking a position on the mat (usually in lines across the mat), students line up in grade order, black belts at the front followed by high grade coloured belts and so on, as a beginner you will stand at the back of the class. We will bow before starting the Lesson.
The Warmup: The warm up will last a few minutes and will involve some stretching and light movement to elevate the body temperature and warm up the joints.
Conditioning: Usually consists of some basic sit up and push up exercise, you may learn some basic blocking and striking techniques or an activity using a training partner or pads.
Group Training Section: We usually teach combination techniques as a group, this may involve punching, blocking, kicking, locking or throwing, weapons defense or groundwork, these techniques are usually based on an attack in a combat situation and may involve being attacked in some cases by an attacker using a knife.
We try to mix new students in with our higher graded students for this section as this helps beginners with new techniques.
Syllabus Section: For the remaining part of the lesson, you will learn to demonstrate one or two techniques that are relevant to the grade you are working towards, for beginners this will be your white belt, these techniques will build week on week until you have reached a level of proficiency and can be considered for assessment or grading for your next belt.
Closing the Session: When the session is finished, we will form the same lines that we were in at the start of the session, we will bow to finish.
You will not be asked to become a member until the end of the FREE 4 week Induction period, this will allow plenty of time to feel comfortable with Ju-Jitsu, until that time you will be able to train as a casual student providing you have signed and returned the student enrolment pack.
We hope that within this period you will have made the decision to join us or decide that Ju-Jitsu is not for you.
You can or course join us before the end of the induction period should you decide to, although you will probably be encouraged to complete your induction first.
Ju-Jitsu Training is more than a hobby it is a chance for you to learn an invaluable life skill as well as making new friends and learning to protect yourself, you will have the chance to embark on an exciting and rewarding Ju-Jitsu career, maybe going on to achieving a DAN Grade (Black Belt Qualification)
Although you will not be expected to join us for some weeks we expect all participants to complete the New Student Enrolment Pack shortly after starting with us.
This will allow you to train with us as a casual student during the Free 4 week induction.
We need this back as soon as possible as there may be information about the student that we need to know from a medical or safeguarding perspective.
Our current Enrolment Pack can be collected from the club office.

Respect
Poor Personal hygiene while training shows a lack of respect for your fellow students, you may be asked to train alone or not at all should you have…

Absolutely superb
club!
Sensei is a seasoned professional who has many years’ experience teaching
martial arts. The management team of BJJKO is fantastic, they teach a fabulous syllabus and have very high safeguarding and welfare standards and policies.
I feel that my girls are learning such important skills, gaining confidence
and being able to defend themselves.
Learning how to handle attackers, training in using and defending against
weapons and building their fitness in every session. Couldnt recommend it enough!

Thank you so much for your determination to keep going. Bill was thrilled with his certificate and newly gained junior leader status last night. He gains so much from the club. It’s so much more than just a place to learn Jujitsu ?

Great set up and very friendly. Well structured routine but also enough variation and different exercises each week to make it fun. The instructors are all really helpful and great with the kids.
