When training for your first time, you will feel out of your depth, you may have never been inside a Dojo before and maybe never thrown or blocked a punch. Don’t worry this is normal, you will not be asked to do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable we want you to enjoy the experience and come back again. A typical session will be set out in the following format.
What you Should wear: For New Students T-Shirt & Jogging Bottoms will be fine, it is important that you are comfortable and your movement is not restricted by your clothes.
What you Shouldn’t wear!: Please do not wear Jeans, Buttoned Shirts, Vests or Shorts.
Opening the Session: We will begin with some formal mat etiquette which involves taking a position on the mat (usually in lines across the mat), we will bow before starting the Lesson.
The Warm Up: the warm up will last a few minutes and will involve some stretching and light movement to elevate the body temperature and warm up the joints.
Conditioning: we will start to learn some basic blocking and striking techniques in Kata form followed by an activity using a training partner or pads.
Group Training Section: each week we will teach some combination technique's at this point which will involve a combination of punching, blocking, kicking, locking or throwing, weapons defense or groundwork (dependant on the content of the class), these techniques are usually based on an attack in a real world situation and may involve being attacked in some cases by an attacker using a knife, We try to mix new students in with our higher graded students for this section as this helps begginers with new techniques.
Syllabus Section: For the remaining part of the lesson we will learn to demonstrate one or two techniques that are relevant to the grade you are working towards, for beginners this will be your white belt, you may learn how to break a strangle hold or how to perform a shoulder lock for instance, these techniques will build week on week until you have reached a level of proficiency and can be considered for assessment or grading for your next belt.
Closing the Session: when the session is finished we will form the same lines that we were in at the start of the session, we will bow to finish.
